LONGEVITY

I’m sitting in a torn long sleeve like a scarecrow trying to blend into the environment of lizards with faces strained from hyaluronic acid. Tight shirts and espadrilles don’t go out of style here, navy fashions bring the sea air of skin smoothing for free to all those present in the auditorium waiting for the presentation of a new red light coffins therapy. Pink V-neck sweaters suitable both for the clinic and the banquet as if there was no difference between the treatment and a date. Watches protruding delicately from under shirts with gold clips that twist themselves so that the owner can see the time, anticipating facial movement so as not to tear strained tendons from examining others style. Some walk sideways down the stairs so that the titanium prosthetic legs don’t shatter with their strength the ancient structure of the university medicine hall they tread on, while others trample noisily, tearing down its foundations and trampling new ones.

Acceptance for post-surgical scarring and hair transplants hangs in the ads. Women enrolled as candidates can correct themselves here on stage for a poorly performed aesthetic medicine procedure in exchange for being the subject of a presentation of a new and better product. A woman lies down on a surgical chaise longue, although I feel that she is also at the same time on a chaise longue of a psychotherapist fixing her smile. It is such a psychotherapist in a syringe who comforts you, gives you advice and is always with you. The camera zooms in on her face projecting the image on a cinema projector, we watch her taut face as if we were looking at Bergman actress Ingrid Thulin, full of affect. Without any unnecessary movements, everything is seen in the infinite eyes and the twitching lower lip through which the needle of a syringe pierces. Doctors in the audience yawn, cadets watch stiffly, and presenters talk at the observers as the mere activity of inserting themselves into someone’s mouth lasts a very short time compared to the entire performance in which women squeeze their failed surgeries like pimples into a medical kidney. The vessel circulates among the participants, as if, thanks to the new specific, the woman cried a diamond instead of a tear of gratitude. Kidney stones can only envy the precious diamonds of plastic surgeons’ work.

It’s the “longevity” conference I’m at, or as others prefer – “long durability.” Age as it is commonly known does not play a role here, what matters is biological age, level of care and exposure to stress. No one smokes heated pens in the conference room and you can’t hear nicotine addicted people increasing traffic in the wheezing front door. The only dopamine people strive for in this room is the fight against death. Silence and full concentration on the lecture when the dreaded red color corresponding to the risk of disease on the diagram increases exponentially with age and opens red veins in people’s allergic eyes. The presentation attacks disease-exposed eighty-year-olds, those whose chance of survival each year is like throwing a dice with six dots.

“Everyone would like to be healthy, this is the first rule of the market. Soon the color red will turn green and death from unforeseen circumstances will become the only reason for it. If at this moment you are threatened by an incurable disease, then we can freeze you for lack of alternatives, you will wake up in 50 years and we will see what medicine will be ready for then. However, we do not give guarantees in case of a cataclysm or bankruptcy of the freezing company. “What will you do when there is no longer an alternative to your life? It’s not sci-fi, it’s medicine my dear.” Dinosaur skeletons and animals encased in formalin knock on the glass and ask to break the cage, and I think of a tasty waffle with fruit in thick gel while fantasizing about what happens at night in the museum.

Berlin is a city of health, assures the Minister giving a speech. I, meanwhile, see groups of lizards on ketamine basking in the sunny parks, alligators in the sewers devouring garbage and clubs dripping with sweat from the sperm and cigarettes that cactuses feed on in this health desert. The communal gardens grow psychedelic mushrooms in pots held by porcelain dwarves so you can reignite the teenager’s rebellion in the local old timers back from the Love Parade days. The host from Berlin coughs like a coughing drunk spread over three seats on the subway, everyone shocked as her irritated throat contrasts with the information she shares. She takes a sip of water, arguing that to be healthy one must drink water, and everyone in the room takes a sip of water. Man is ultimately made up of bottled water, so let’s flow together in this waterfall like a stream from the inside of a mountain to the unscrewed taps of our taxes with the minister. Just dose it at the right intervals so it doesn’t seep through the body.

“Last but not least,” everyone’s heads in their phones like ostriches’ mouths in a sand scrub, as we expected it to be “last” and that the time for sponsors or politics would be over and we would have already moved on to presenting futuristic products. Every minute counts when it comes to health and the amount of collagen, after all, life gets tougher every day. But that today would be a great day to check-up for cancer, no one at this symposium has yet informed me.

The microphones attached to the auditorium seats look like sperm flowing to create a baby to survive the climate catastrophe with longevity solutions. Soon people who want to have children will no longer be called barbarians, and the rest of the sperm will be frozen and preserved to create chimeras, like a cherry that pairs with a raspberry somewhere in a seed bunker in Iceland. A theater director in the audience wonders how he can still be violent for a few more years. He farts into a microphone attached to his seat during the performance and presses the question-ready button for the tenth time. He has to speak up because his artistic opinion is a medical fact.

“What can we do with our heart rate data from a smartwatch?” Asks one of the participants taking the floor to the director. Nothing, you can only give them to corporations so they know when you lack sleep and whether you feel older in the evenings. After getting banned for allegedly promoting child pornography on social media, a person doesn’t so much disappear from the site, but his data remains in place and access to it is restricted. It’s like looking at your own lobotomy. Someone is holding your memories in a ducat sachet, and as much as you’d like to take a mortal risk to play poker for them again by putting the remains of yourself on the table, they won’t give you that chance, because they’d rather pull your brains out with pliers without risking your intervention. You can wave your hands and tap on the glass of the skyscraper with logo, but there is no “support”, only frequently asked questions and links forwarding you from place to place. I’m not surprised that some people go up the glass on skyscrapers, probably entering from the roof is easier than from the street. It’s not adrenaline that drives such superhumans, it’s desperation, and desperation doesn’t make your hands sweat, so you can climb on the Marriott tower with no problem. That’s how the idea for Spiderman came about, out of frustration after the pizza delivery guy’s account was banned. I’ve been deprived of some of my memories, relationships, associations and a sense of carefully configured choice of what I observe, which is basically what makes me who I am and I don’t even have recourse.  Corporations are stronger than states and our sense of belonging.

Feel this opening life extension market that flows like blood through these skyscrapers. Being healthy is the most important thing for everyone, even more important than your phone and social media. If one were to treat the cause instead of the disease in an already rank stage, the economy would collapse, because such huge money is made only on cheap reimbursed drugs. You go to the doctor when it’s too late, and it’s no wonder, because we want to enjoy life, not think about it endlessly preventively. Everything could be done better, everything can be harmful, like the stress associated with such awareness, and this creates diseases that then need to be treated with new inventions.

The guests of the talk slump in their chairs after an hour and sit crooked, bending the aluminum furniture and their spines leading to scoliosis in the long run. They act as if they are not listening to themselves. A rich man comes to see a doctor, and the doctor is also a rich man, not a “preventionist.”

I don’t know, somehow it never even occurred to me that I might die, or that my flip-flops might break. I also can’t imagine life without my cat, whom I’ve known since birth, so right after his death I gave his name to a mascot, so that I don’t have to imagine it and stay with a rigid image. I have such moments when I remind myself that I will die someday and panic. Mostly at night, or when I see a little girl’s scattered shoes on the street in broad daylight. I don’t know, one wouldn’t be able to live thinking about dying, and yet death is all around us just like a perfume that after a hundred days of wearing it you don’t smell anymore. Actually, perfume is bought only for others, just like flowers on a grave are bought only for others. “Just as the airports at which you smell perfume are a moment for you, so death could be a moment chosen by you,” the speakers argue, and somehow this stuns me, so I go out to eat corks at the banquet.

I think the closest I’ve been to death was at my grandfather’s funeral. Stupor, a complete black dog and depressions below sea level filled with debris from the porcelain factory, meant to function as temporary patches on the road to heaven. Graves are probably dug here with a snow groomer, as corpses happen to be pulled out along with the potatoes. Here people don’t come for the potato harvest, they come for the skulls, and instead of the Forefathers’ Eve we have old grandfathers eating mackerel with wrinkled skin. Some people like the skin of the smoked fish best because you can slurp it, and it excites them when it falls into the wrong hole. The people who live in these areas accumulate a thick layer of fat before winter, which, too valuable to give away after death to the earth, is added to the duck blood soup and solidifies in the blood giving the illusion of lean meat in the bone broth. Some people sip the soup still with water so that the fat separates from the rest in the stomach and you can taste all the elements of these perversions separately. No matter, I guess the closest I came to someone’s death was right here in Poland.

A creaking crank slowly carries the coffin downstairs, it begins to rain, the pit is covered with a beer brand tent borrowed from the local tavern where the wake will be held. The funeral guests pull out the coats they hid for burial in the empty standing coffins next to them. The colors changed dramatically from black to more vividly colored, after all, not everyone can afford a jacket to match the rest of their outfit, and health comes first. When everyone put on their coats I felt a bit like I was at the funeral of some goth who liked pony ponies and had an unusually edgy humor. I was reminded of the shoes one buys in middle school, the kind that have to fit everything, because there’s no point in buying clothing for a growing foot. If it were possible to tailor how one grows and dies quickly, children’s shoe stores would have much less revenue, and funerals would perhaps be bigger and more spectacular events like a cannon shot, or a coffin flight into space.

And how would you like to be buried if you had a choice? I would like to become a tree, but it’s illegal in Poland. You would have to send the ashes to the Czech Republic, where they would mix them with sand and send them back. Only then can you decide about your own body when it is mixed with sand – which is significantly too late. I’ve been wondering lately why people mostly don’t live underground, so that the coolness of the foundations ventilates their hot and passionate lives hidden from the view of the world. Perhaps it is because culturally we regard anything below the level of the sidewalk as an intrusion into our own death, and not everyone is as excited about it. We have to get out from under the stones and have a look at real life.

I came home after the longevity conference, and it massed together in me all the moments in which no matter how hard I tried, prevention would not work. I look at the oatmeal, and there grapes, raisins, bananas and blueberry yogurt form a mosaic of a face familiar to me from the depths of memory. In the watercolor-like pulsations of milk spilling out, I recognize the lake, the pier and the campers. A large family van stands parked stiffly on a handheld under the trees. The van has a solar panel, a retractable canopy and a grill built into the side wall on which spongy eggplants fry, returning to their starting form when touched. From inside come children’s cartoons chaotically changing sounds. It’s the kind of car I’ve always wanted to have, so I could be self-sufficient and protect myself from the rain of frogs I abhor. The young gypsy goes around campers and tents asking for money to buy candy for his sisters who jump into the lake in their dresses. If he is refused, he returns after a few minutes like a blob of Chinese water torture. I’m not talking about jumping into the water in clothes, the human brain feeds on anticipation and a relationship with someone is the payment for the magic of that anticipation. Unfortunately, the same mechanism is also at work when it comes to the fear of the question being repeated yet again, like “whose face is in the oatmeal” for the umpteenth day in a row. My irritated aunt slaps  the gypsy with a flyswatter. Candyfloss and ice cream for scoops, a gentleman with a barrel organ stands in front of you and pretends he’s not playing for you, and then he takes off his cap with a spinning fan in front of you and it’s a shame not to throw money into the turbine. I was seven years old at the time and throwing money a.k.a. paying was mega exciting.

I watch it all through the reflection in the glasses of the person I’m sitting next to, wondering childishly what kind of glasses I wear every day and if everyone sees the same colors. I cover the right eyeball and the blacks become bluer, like in the evening before sunset when the sky merges with the earth. Covering the left eyeball, I disappear for a moment before realizing that I covered them both. I thought it was super powers because the afterimages were drawing spatial orientation under my eyelids. I uncover the right one and everything becomes sharper, as if my vision wandered only over specific objects increasing the contrast in my lens, meeting my grandfather’s twisted chicken claws in a ray of sunlight. I need to immediately wash my eyes from this sight, so I run in my bourgeoisie shorts to the pier and aim to jump into the village water. I remind myself that I have a phone in my back pocket, so I look around to see if anyone can see me so I can strip down pants. Everyone sees me on the beach, including a confused family. They all have a windbreak and I don’t, so they can see me and I can’t see them. I’m like in a cage at an erotica trade show convention, where women with illuminati logos on their buttocks are videotaped by balding boars with cameras. It’s hard, I jump in with my phone, at worst I have my memories automatically synced to the cloud.

I darted a little too hard into the water because my hand papillary lines met the algae, and it’s the deep part of the tank of water that I’m very afraid of. I can’t help but think that there will always be a bigger fish than me that will devour me in the momentum of jumping above the water to belly flop on the surface and splatter on the recording phones from the beach. I never dreamed of being remembered as splashing boiling water after a geyser eruption on smartphone screens, but now I’m thinking to myself that, all in all, it depends on what kind of coverage I get. Popularity in its infancy is growing day by day in importance like the price of Minecraft. I don’t know why I’ve been debating whether to jump in with my phone or not, I have it de facto glued to my hand, so more pain would be inflicted by this surgical procedure than drowning along with my habits.

I turn around looking toward the surface touching kelp with my foot that braids itself around my ankle forming a DNA braid of chronology, starting with algae from a billion years ago and ending with me with a phone in my hand. I’m barely in the cell phone phase, and already the world is beginning the space phase. At least that’s what the world looks like from a child’s perspective five meters underwater – it has the weight of space, and makes you move as if there is no gravity and density of air to wade through. I’m fine hanging in the water held by a stick of algae, but I’m running out of air, so I let out a bubbling muffled scream of my own and slam into the surface like an asteroid into planet earth. In space, sound doesn’t travel, so no one even heard me. I’m still writhing from the lack of gravity on the platform, but I calm down with each expectoration of water on the thighs of my cousin whom I see for the first time petrified and for the first time in a bathing suit. I remember exactly the beads on her ankle with the compote stain, which still reminded me for a moment of the algae holding my foot in the water. The feet of young boys with disposable tattoos passed my head lying on the planks of the pier and flew off into the water. I got up and, as if nothing ever happened, talked my cousin into shooting with cap guns. All was well afterwards, and my grandfather, in honor of my dive, watered down the scrag end with beer, a can of which ended up in the pile of scrap metal I was collecting and selling not far from the lake at the collection center. It’s safe to say that I earned money from that jump into the water for a new phone.

Grandma made me oatmeal with fruit, and I’m trying to form a word out of the ingredients. A lifeguard on his third day of carouse hits on the frisky students and pulls out a leashed chihuahua of the lady doing the grilling with her sinking pride. I dangle with a spoon, and Grandpa shows me the different countries and their armies fighting on the training ground of my plate. I devour Napoleon’s sour army first and pardon the submarines. A lifeguard as red as a fresh salmon jumps into the water with a belay buoy and dives in fishing some guy to the surface. A rally around the lifeguard, the organ grinder has stopped spinning the crank and is cooling down with a fan from his cap looking towards the fished out body. I assembly a smiling face with the banana on my plate and fly with the air gun to see what happened. At the time, I didn’t quite have any references or images to describe what I was seeing, so I imagined the body as a sponge, a bit like an eggplant frying next to an idyllic camper. Pale from wringing, full of foam coming out of the holes and motionless, drying quickly in the sun. Its body was so blue that I began to wonder if they had accidentally fished out a horseshoe crab, which is known to have milky azure blood. Unfortunately horseshoe crab inhabit the earth for about 200 million years, have survived many disasters and catastrophes, and for the past few decades most people owe them their lives, as they are used for vaccines. Of all those gathered over the boy, only the rescuer can say that he owes him his life, otherwise he would have just been hitting on frisky beachgoer students his entire life.

Now that I’m twenty-four years old, I’m already almost sure, and you could even say I remember, that this face, that the face I saw this morning in the teleport of my oatmeal, is the face of the boy who hit his head on the pier while trying to jump flip into the water some fifteen years ago, right after I myself barely failed to drown. Apparently, you could say that the situation was hardly unusual in my high school days, because the expectation bar was set high by the company. Drunks unhooked a yacht from the marina, lowered a trailer of canoes standing on a hill into the water and smashed the roof tiles of a triangular house. Another one, last night rode on a snow apple pulled by a garden lawn mowing tractor doing a slalom like water skiing. I expected from the morning a smiling cookie from the Teletubbies that was engrained in me as the normalized proportions of a happy person as a child, and what I got was an engraved image of a video well below the PEGI tag that shows you an older cousin on vacation. It’s time to stitch up the boy’s face, so I’ll start by taking the seeds out of the grapes of my oatmeal.

His jaw held by one of the docs in the palm of his hand, his teeth fly out from between his fingers so the nurse picks them up like a baby sitter dropping toys from a soiled eating chair. The first association came to me with the flycatcher, whose mouth closes on contact with an insect and crushes the inside. The face spilled out like a broken warm apple pie from the oven after contact with a quartering cleaver. A young boy with the hopeless result of jumping head-first is already an elephant man, but with a torn interior, because knowing the beauty of youth he cannot continue it. It’s easier to be an elephant man from birth than a boy what wanted to show off and broke the back of his identity. They said don’t take a header as often as they warned against snorting glue, and the boys snorted behind the kennels and hid from the heat. The boy played guitar and practiced rhythmics in his spare time with sticks by beating himself on the thigh with them. He had a metronome in his head, as he brushed his teeth it was only allegro on the stave of his teeth, slightly purple from drinking dry wine. When his mother saw him purple, she told the rescuers that it was because he happened to drink a glass of wine for dinner and asked him if he has a hangover. He didn’t answer, of course.

His parents turned the garage into a drum practice studio. They held out as long as the cafetiere didn’t explode from the volume and the force of the metal shrapnel didn’t pierce like a shuriken the wall to their duplex neighbor, the type of house of course. Then the trouble began. The boy’s father had to sleep with the councilwoman to repeal the permissible decibels on the guarded estate. By the way, they managed to repeal that nonsense rule about the need to enclose the swimming pool with a fence in one intercourse. Unfortunately, the father slept with the councilwoman and, despite the lack of decibels, stopped getting enough sleep.

Speaking of sound, let’s take a walk and immerse ourselves in landscapes that were once full of death, but now wheeze from the passing wind left to be eaten by nature. If you listened to a former concentration camp, you would hear mostly birdsong. You won’t hear the sound of women forced to be sex workers, the river flowing next door has already listened for them when they washed up, washing their underwear. I asked and the river also thinks it’s unimaginable for a grandmother to have to undress in front of her daughter. I stand in the middle on the paved concrete slab and hear the trods of the modern waterproof shoe sole and the rustling of a gore tex jacket. The sound passing through the dried tree trunks, the foil covering the rubble, the meter to measure the water with which the flowers around the monuments are watered and the bolt being screwed into the newly commissioned memorial plaque. A shaky can of spray paint resembles the clatter of a woodpecker, young boys make tags on the camp wall. The rain was falling, so I sat under a miniature model of the complex in the middle of the field. The rain emits an ambient that, after a moment of careful listening, my brain begins to unconsciously cut out. My attention shifts from being present in the moment to imagination. I hear the sound of metal breaking in micro-frequencies, the scraping of words with nails on walls, creaking tracks and the nailing of horseshoes to horses whose cries muffle the sounds of people. A spring-loaded electrified fence that a person throws himself against in his escape and an electrical discharge that retreats me to the rain to see if I’ve been electrocuted.

Back at the station, grandmothers are tending gardens, putting up marble dwarves and frog figurines. Retired Nazis buy a plot of land with the number “44” and hang another next to it to add up to “88.” An eagle statue in the form of a fountain, a stuffed hawk hangs on the porch. I walk past unimaginably annoyed and take a sip of kefir. I wonder if kefir tastes like it tastes because of time or through its taste. Can’t old Nazis wean themselves from the taste of tea made from mint growing on the land where people died?

I’m at the train station, the windy air conditioning gate hits me as I walk through the automatic doors. I walk through the mall to get to the platform, the sounds changing as I pass each store and drowning out my thoughts and needs. No wonder people make the same mistakes if they have to experience this cacophony to get from city to city by train.

The war against the reversal of biological age is like a patch for an arterial hemorrhage, like romanticizing the love of the drunkards on the Warschauer Strasse metro station. People exit trains, a voiceover broadcasts an announcement, an automatic cash register beeps, and two people kiss while drinking the same stream of beer like mongrels in love with spaghetti noodles. Of course, age reversal is possible, but include the circumstances in your diagrams, Mr scientist. I can hear another bell ringing in the cemetery as it unravels my eardrums and the “micrometal” in the circulation of my blood. Please don’t tell me who the bell is or isn’t tolling for, because I know it’s tolling for all of us, and I’m very, very afraid of it, and there has been not a month in which I wouldn’t think about it.

Berlin to miasto zdrowia, zapewnia Pani minister dając przemowę.

Trzeba by wysłać prochy do Czech, gdzie zmieszają je z piachem i wyślą spowrotem.

Patrzę w owsiankę, a tam winogrona, rodzynki, banany i jagodowy jogurt formują mozaikę znanej mi z odmętów pamięci twarzy. W rozlanych jak akwarele pulsacjach mleka rozpoznaję jezioro, pomost i campery.

Ratownik w trzecim dniu libacji zagaja do roznegliżowanych studentek i wyciąga pani robiącej grila jej tonącą dumę – spuszczoną z łańcucha chihuahue. Majdam łyżką, a dziadek pokazuje mi różne kraje i ich wojska walczące na poligonie mojego talerza. Pożeram najpierw kwaśną armię napoleona i ułaskawiam łodzie podwodne.

Jakbyś posłuchał byłego obozu koncentracyjnego, to usłyszałbyś głównie śpiew ptaków. Stoję pośrodku na utwardzonej płycie betonowej i słyszę nacisk nowoczesnej nieprzemakalnej podeszwy butów zrobionych z zamszu i szelest kurtki z goretexu.

Przechodzę obok niewyobrażalnie wkurwiony i biorę łyka kefiru.
